The single most important factor in getting landlord permission for plug-in solar is framing the request correctly. Vague requests get vague or negative responses. A clear, factual email that answers the questions before they are asked gets a much quicker yes.
Here is a template you can adapt. Change the specifics for your property and the product you are planning to buy.
Subject: Request for permission to install a portable plug-in solar system
Dear [Landlord’s name],
I am writing to request your permission to install a small plug-in solar system at [property address]. I want to give you all the relevant details so you can make an informed decision.
What I am proposing to install:
One or two solar panels (each approximately 1.7m x 1m) with a microinverter, mounted on [the balcony railing / a ground frame in the garden / other location]. The panels connect to a standard indoor socket via a slim cable that passes under the [balcony door / window].
Why this does not affect the property:
The system is entirely portable and removable. The mounting brackets clamp to the [railing / fence] without drilling or permanent fixings. The cable connects to an existing socket with no modification to the electrical installation. When I leave the property, the whole system comes with me and the property is restored to exactly its current state.
Compliance:
The system complies with UK electrical regulations under BS 7671 Amendment 4, which legalised plug-in solar in April 2026. I will complete the required G98 notification to the local Distribution Network Operator before connecting the system, and will arrange connection through a CPS-registered electrician as currently required.
Financial and environmental benefit:
A system of this type saves a typical household between £100 and £180 per year on electricity bills and reduces carbon emissions by approximately 300 to 400 kg per year. It does not affect the value or condition of the property.
I am happy to provide any additional information or the product specifications if that would be helpful. I would appreciate a response within 28 days.
Many thanks,
[Your name]
Tips for using this template
Send it by email so you have a written record of both the request and the response. If your landlord uses a letting agent, send it to the agent and CC your landlord if you have their direct contact.
Attach a product brochure or a screenshot of the kit you are planning to buy. Letting your landlord see exactly what it looks like removes uncertainty.
If you have an existing good relationship with your landlord, a phone call first to give them a heads-up before the formal email can smooth the process. But always follow up with the written request regardless.
If your landlord comes back with questions, our renters permission guide covers the most common objections and how to address them. And if they refuse without reasonable grounds, the renters rights page covers your options under the Renters Rights Act 2025.
