Plug-in solar is genuinely accessible technology. The new UK regulations under SI 2026/848 exist precisely because the safety case for well-made products was strong enough to justify removing the electrician requirement for certified kits. But accessible does not mean risk-free, and there are five things worth knowing before you connect anything to your home’s circuits.

I have been running the EcoFlow STREAM at home in Peterborough since spring 2026. None of this is theoretical. The safety habits that matter are the obvious ones that are easy to skip when you are excited about getting the system running.


1. Only buy products with verified certification

From 27 August 2026, the only plug-in solar products legally permitted to connect to a standard UK 13A socket are those certified against the Interim Product Specification v2.0 and listed on the ENA G98 Type Test Register. This is not a technicality — it is the mechanism that ensures the product has anti-islanding protection, live pin protection, and power limiting built in.

Anti-islanding is the safety feature that matters most. It automatically shuts the inverter down if grid power is lost, preventing your solar system from continuing to feed electricity into a circuit that utility engineers believe is dead. Without it, an engineer restoring power after a fault could be working on a live circuit fed by your panels. Every certified product must have it. Non-certified imports — and there are many on Amazon Marketplace — may not.

2. Check your consumer unit before connecting anything

The joint safety statement from five electrical bodies in June 2026 — the ECA, Electrical Safety First, the IET, NICEIC and SELECT — flagged older housing stock as the primary risk area. More than half of UK homes are over 100 years old. Many have consumer units that were last looked at decades ago and may have Type AC RCDs rather than the Type B devices needed for circuits with inverter-connected equipment.

Before connecting a plug-in solar system, check that your consumer unit has been updated relatively recently and that the circuit you intend to use has appropriate RCD protection. If your consumer unit still has old rewirable fuses, or if you are unsure about its condition, have it inspected by a registered electrician before adding any generating equipment. This applies whether you are using the socket-connection route or having the system hardwired. The regulations protect you from the system, not from your home’s existing wiring.

3. Never use extension leads or multi-socket adaptors

This was the specific concern that most worried the electrical bodies in June 2026, and it is easy to see why. A plug-in solar inverter pushing 800W continuously through a lightweight extension lead is not what the lead was designed for. Extension leads and adaptors are rated for occasional high-draw use, not sustained generation loads. Heat builds up. The connection can arc. In worst cases, fires start.

Connect directly to a fixed wall socket on the circuit you have designated for the system. If the socket is not in the right place for where you want to mount the inverter, move the inverter or have an electrician add a socket — do not run an extension lead. This is the cheapest and most common installation mistake and it is also the one most likely to cause a problem.


4. Mount the inverter with clearance and keep it out of direct sun

Inverters generate heat during operation and they need airflow to dissipate it. Mounted flush against a wall with no gap, or enclosed in a box, they overheat and thermal protection kicks in — throttling output and reducing efficiency. On a hot summer day with the inverter in direct sun, temperatures can reach 70 to 80°C. At those temperatures the device protects itself, but sustained heat cycling shortens the component life of the capacitors inside.

Mount the inverter on a shaded wall or fence with at least a few centimetres of clearance on all sides. If it is going indoors — a shed or garage — make sure there is ventilation. Mounting to metal sheeting acts as a heatsink and helps significantly. The inverter’s DC cable runs should be as short as possible to minimise resistive losses and reduce the length of exposed DC cabling.

5. Submit your G98 notification — and tell your insurer

G98 notification to your Distribution Network Operator is mandatory within 28 days of connecting a plug-in solar system. It is a free online form and your DNO cannot refuse a compliant installation, but skipping it leaves you technically non-compliant. Find your DNO at the Energy Networks Association.

Equally important and almost universally skipped: notify your home insurer. Most home insurance policies do not require prior approval for plug-in solar, but an uncertified or incorrectly installed system that causes a fault could invalidate a claim. Write to your insurer in advance, confirm the system is certified and properly installed, and keep the response. It takes fifteen minutes and it protects you if something goes wrong. The bottom line

Plug-in solar is not inherently dangerous. The electrical bodies’ concerns were about the specific risks of non-certified products, older wiring, and bad installation habits — not about well-made certified systems properly installed. Follow these five steps and you are operating a safe, legal, productive system. Skip them and you are taking risks that are genuinely not worth taking for the sake of a few minutes saved.
