If you ask why plug-in solar in the UK is capped at 800W, most answers say it is for safety. That is true, but the specific number comes from concrete electrical engineering. Here is what is actually behind it.

The ring circuit problem

UK domestic wiring uses ring final circuits almost universally. A ring circuit connects all the sockets in a room or floor in a loop back to the consumer unit, with each end protected by a single breaker. In Germany, where Balkonkraftwerk took off, homes use radial circuits — one cable from the breaker to each socket, no loop. The safety analysis for back-feeding into a radial circuit is simpler and more predictable.

A ring circuit creates a specific back-feeding problem. When a microinverter feeds current into a ring socket, that current can flow in both directions around the loop. The cable segment between the inverter socket and the nearest load junction may carry the combined sum of the inverter output current and the load current. This is the fault scenario that UK engineers spent the most time modelling during the government’s plug-in solar safety study (completed February 2026).

Where 800W comes from

The safety study modelled various output levels against UK ring circuit configurations. At 800W, the worst-case additional current in a ring circuit cable segment stayed within safe limits under adverse loading assumptions. Above 800W, some configurations produced cable current levels the study authors were not comfortable recommending without additional protection. 800W is also the limit Germany extended Balkonkraftwerk to in 2024 — aligning with existing European safety evidence.

Note that 800W refers to AC output from the inverter, not panel DC input. You can connect up to 2,000W of panels to an 800W inverter because the inverter clips at 800W AC. More panel capacity improves low-light performance without exceeding the circuit safety limit. Most plug-in installs with two 400W to 465W panels will approach but rarely hit 800W in peak UK summer conditions.
