June was the busiest month UK plug-in solar has ever had. A government consultation, a major safety warning, seven major retailers in a room with an Energy Minister, and a draft product specification that will eventually decide what you can legally buy in a shop. A lot happened. Here is all of it in one place.

The consultation that changes everything
On 16 June, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero published a formal consultation on plug-in solar product safety. It closed on 30 June. That two-week window is the most consequential thing that happened in UK plug-in solar this year.
Here is what it actually covered. The government proposed amending the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations to create a specific exemption for compliant plug-in solar devices. Alongside that, they published a draft interim product specification, modelled on Germany’s existing standards for speed, that sets out what a certified UK kit must do before it can be legally sold for self-installation. Anti-islanding protection, live pin protection, power limiting, rapid shutdown. The things that make a plug-in solar system safe to connect to a standard UK socket.
The government response to the consultation is expected around 22 July. After that, the regulations need to be laid before Parliament, manufacturers need to certify their products against the interim spec, and retailers need to stock them. A realistic timeline for compliant kits appearing in shops is late summer or early autumn 2026.
One important detail that got buried in the coverage: batteries are explicitly excluded from the interim specification. A plug-in battery system, the kind that lets you store cheap overnight electricity and run your home from it in the evening, will not be part of the first wave of legal self-install products. The economics still work without a battery, but it is a meaningful limitation worth knowing about before you buy.
B&Q, Currys, Amazon, Lidl, Screwfix and Wickes are all in
On the same day as the consultation, the government held a retailer roundtable with some of the largest names in UK retail. B&Q, Currys, Amazon, Lidl, Asda, Screwfix and Wickes all attended. Between them, almost four thousand physical stores and dominant online reach. Energy Minister Martin McCluskey called plug-in panels transformative for renters and lower-income households.
B&Q said it is working closely with government and suppliers to shape the guidance. Currys pointed out that more than 80% of UK households shop there. Lidl want to make sustainable choices affordable and accessible. The press release language is predictably corporate, but the presence of all these retailers in the same room matters. When the product specification is finalised, they will be ready to move.
This is a much bigger retail picture than the Lidl and Iceland announcement from March. The addition of B&Q and Currys in particular changes the accessibility of these products significantly. B&Q stores are in most towns. Currys has a large-appliance customer base that understands technology purchases. These are not niche channels.
The safety warning escalated
On 12 June, a joint alert from Electrical Safety First, the Health and Safety Executive, and the IET added more detail to the concerns raised by the five-body statement on 8 June that we covered in the previous weekly roundup.
The new alert included some specific figures that are worth taking seriously. Trading Standards investigations have found hundreds of online listings for plug-in solar kits displaying fake CE or UKCA marks. Laboratory tests on seized units found that 70% failed to meet the safety requirements of the Low Voltage Directive. Two units exploded during simulated overload tests. The statement also referenced a near-miss in South Wales involving a kit that failed to disconnect when grid power went down, leaving the circuit live for engineers working to restore power.
The practical takeaway has not changed: buy from a reputable supplier, verify the inverter certification is genuine, and do not import cheap kits from unknown sources via online marketplaces. The products at the quality end of the market, EcoFlow, Hoymiles, APsystems, are a different category from the substandard imports that generated those test results. But the warning is a useful reminder that not everything listed as plug-in solar online is the same product.

The safety study results
DESNZ commissioned an independent safety study from Arceio Limited, awarded in October 2025 at a contract value of £80,309. The results were published alongside the June consultation. The study tested six representative plug-in kits on UK-style circuits and found they operated safely within the tested conditions.
Importantly, it approved no specific product. Its purpose was to provide evidence for writing a product standard, not to certify anything currently on sale. The study also flagged a fire safety assessment for blocks of flats, particularly those with fire-prone cladding, as priority follow-on work that has not yet been done. If you live in a flat, that is a gap in the current evidence base worth being aware of.
Where the regulation actually stands right now
There is a lot of confusion about this, so here is the honest version as of the end of June 2026.
BS 7671 Amendment 4 came into force on 15 April 2026. This is a wiring regulations update, not a plug-in solar enabler. It introduced requirements around bidirectional protective devices and updated rules on battery energy storage systems. It is relevant groundwork, but it did not by itself make socket connection of a plug-in solar system legal.
The interim product specification published on 16 June is a government consultation document, not a law. Until the enabling regulations follow, the only compliant installation route remains a kit hardwired to its own circuit breaker by a CPS-registered electrician, with a G98 notification to your DNO. That route is legal, functional, and what most people who have a working system right now are using.
The 0% VAT on solar panels and batteries currently runs until March 2027. If compliant self-install kits hit shops in autumn 2026 as expected, that gives roughly six months of VAT-free purchasing before the rate reverts to 5%.

My setup is finally running
On a more personal note: my EcoFlow STREAM setup has arrived and is generating. I started with the panels on the lawn while I sort out permanent mounting, and within the first few days had already hit over 10 kWh of generation. The app is clean, the setup was straightforward, and the real-world performance is matching what I expected from the specs.

What to watch in July
The government response to the consultation is expected around 22 July. That response will set the timeline for when compliant kits can legally go on sale for self-installation. It is the single most important date in UK plug-in solar right now. Watch this space.
