Ring Circuits vs Radial Circuits: Why It Matters for Plug-In Solar
If you have read anything about why plug-in solar took longer to legalise in the UK than in Germany, you have probably seen a reference to ring circuits. Most articles gloss over what this actually means. Here is the engineering in plain English.
What a ring circuit is
A ring final circuit connects sockets in a complete loop. The cable leaves the consumer unit, visits each socket in sequence, and the other end returns to the same breaker — both ends of the cable connected to the same terminals. This halves the effective resistance and doubles the current-carrying capacity compared to a single cable of the same gauge, which is why a 32A breaker on a 2.5mm² ring can serve many more sockets than the same breaker on a radial circuit would.
Ring circuits are used almost exclusively in the UK and a few countries with British electrical heritage. They were developed in 1947 as a way to serve more sockets with less cable.
What a radial circuit is
A radial circuit runs from the breaker to each socket in sequence, ending at the last socket. No loop, no return cable. To provide the same current capacity as a ring, a radial needs a larger cable or a lower breaker rating. Most of the world uses radial circuits, including Germany.
Why the ring creates the back-feeding problem
When a microinverter feeds power into a ring circuit socket, the current can flow in both directions around the ring simultaneously — toward the consumer unit from both sides at once. The cable segment between the inverter socket and the nearest load junction may carry the combined sum of the inverter output current and load current. On a radial circuit, current can only flow one way from any given socket and this scenario cannot arise.
The government’s safety study modelled worst-case ring circuit configurations at various inverter output levels and found 800W to be the point at which the additional current risk was acceptable. This is the engineering basis for the 800W limit and the reason the UK’s regulatory journey was more complex than Germany’s.
