EcoFlow is the government’s named technology partner for the UK plug-in solar rollout, and they make two products that are relevant to UK buyers in 2026: the STREAM and the PowerStream. They are not the same thing, and choosing the wrong one is an easy mistake to make if you are going purely on brand name.

What the STREAM is

The STREAM is EcoFlow’s entry-level plug-in solar system, designed specifically for balcony, garden and terrace installations. It strips the concept back to the essentials: solar panels, a microinverter, and a connection to a standard socket. A full 800W kit with two panels costs around £499 from Amazon UK and specialist retailers. This is the product most likely to appear on Lidl and Iceland shelves when retail sales begin later in 2026.

The STREAM supports battery expansion using EcoFlow’s modular battery units, so you can start with panels only and add storage later. This upgradeable approach is one of the more practical aspects of the product.

What the PowerStream is

The PowerStream is a more capable system designed around intelligent energy management. It connects to your home’s smart meter and automatically adjusts its output to match your real-time electricity consumption, minimising what flows back to the grid unpaid. It supports EcoFlow’s Delta and River portable power station batteries for storage. The app experience is more detailed, offering historical generation data, consumption analysis and smart scheduling. It starts at around £209 for the microinverter alone, with complete kits including panels sitting higher depending on configuration.

The microinverter warranty gap

One point worth noting: EcoFlow offers a five-year warranty on their microinverters, which is shorter than the ten to twelve years offered by competing brands such as Hoymiles, Anker and Zendure. Microinverters are the component most likely to need replacing over a twenty-year system life. This does not make EcoFlow a bad choice, but it is worth factoring into a long-term cost comparison.

Which one to buy

If you want the simplest, most affordable way to start generating solar electricity and you do not need battery integration from day one, the STREAM is the obvious starting point. It is the product the UK government designed the rollout around, and it is what most first-time buyers will encounter at retail.

If you use significant amounts of electricity in the evening, want intelligent self-consumption optimisation, or are planning to pair your system with a time-of-use tariff like Octopus Go, the PowerStream earns its higher price. The combination of smart consumption matching and cheap-rate overnight charging can meaningfully increase your annual saving compared to a panel-only setup.

If you are undecided, buying the STREAM now and adding a battery later when funds allow is a sensible path. EcoFlow have confirmed the STREAM is compatible with their modular battery range, so you are not locked out of storage by starting with the cheaper option.
