Can I Connect Plug-In Solar Panels in Parallel to Get More Power?
This comes from people who want more generation but are not sure how to achieve it. Paralleling panels is technically possible but rarely the right approach for a UK plug-in solar system.
What paralleling does electrically
Connecting two solar panels in parallel means linking positive to positive and negative to negative. The voltage stays the same as a single panel. The current doubles. Two 465W panels at 34V and 13.7A in parallel produce 34V and 27.4A — 932W DC input to one MPPT input.
Why paralleling causes problems for plug-in solar
Most plug-in solar microinverters have a maximum current rating per MPPT input of 16A. Two paralleled 400W to 465W panels produce 26 to 28A — well above the 16A limit. Exceeding the current rating risks damaging the inverter. Second, the AC output is still capped at 800W regardless. Whether you put one panel or two in parallel on a single MPPT input, the inverter produces the same 800W AC maximum in full sun. You have doubled the DC current risk without increasing the generation ceiling.
The correct approach: independent MPPT inputs
The EcoFlow STREAM Ultra and Ultra X have four independent MPPT inputs, each rated for one panel at up to 500W and 16A. Connect four panels — one per input — and each is tracked independently within its rated limits. Four 465W panels produce up to 1,860W DC input across four inputs, with the Ultra X capping at 1,200W AC output. This is the correct configuration for maximum generation within the system’s design.
