About Solar Plugin UK
I’m Karl Dyson, and I’ve been obsessed with getting the most out of every unit of energy since long before it was fashionable.
Most people know me from Hypermiler.co.uk, which I started in 2008 to cover EV efficiency, fuel-saving techniques, and the kind of real-world driving data that manufacturer specs never tell you. Over the past 17 years I’ve contributed to BBC radio across multiple stations, worked directly with manufacturers including BYD UK, and built one of the longer-running independent automotive energy sites in the country.
Solar Plugin UK grew out of the same instinct. When plug-in solar started becoming genuinely viable for UK homes and when the regulations finally started catching up with the technology. I wanted a place to cover it the way Hypermiler covers EVs. Honest, specific, tested, and written for someone who actually wants to understand what they’re buying.
I have a plug-in solar system running at my home in Stamford. I charge on an Octopus Intelligent tariff through an Ohme Pro. I know what these systems actually do in British weather, on a British ring main, with a British consumer unit, not under laboratory conditions in a press release.
What this site is and isn’t
Solar Plugin UK is independent. I don’t take money from manufacturers to say nice things about their products, and I don’t publish content I haven’t checked. Where I have commercial relationships such as affiliate links or advertising partnerships I say so clearly on the relevant page.
Some articles on this site are drafted or refined with AI writing tools to help with structure and readability. Every article is reviewed, fact-checked, and edited by me before it goes live. The opinions, the judgements, the real-world context — those are mine.
I’m also not an electrician, and this site is not a substitute for professional electrical advice. The regulations around plug-in solar in the UK are evolving quickly and some of them are genuinely complex. I explain them as clearly as I can, but for anything involving your consumer unit or a G98 notification, please speak to a qualified professional. Our Terms and Conditions cover this in full.

What we cover
Plug-in solar is a fast-growing movement in the UK, but good, reliable information written specifically for British consumers is hard to find. Most guides are written for European regulations, use unfamiliar plug standards, or assume you already know what you’re doing. We don’t do that.
UK laws & regulations
We explain the current legal position for plug-in solar in the UK — including DNO (Distribution Network Operator) notification requirements, G98 and G99 rules, permitted development rights, and what renters can and cannot do without landlord permission. We keep this updated as the rules evolve.
Fitting & installation guides
From mounting your first panel on a south-facing wall to wiring up a micro-inverter safely, our step-by-step fitting guides are written for real people — not electricians. We cover balcony mounts, flat roof setups, garden installations, and more.
Beginner & buyer guides
Not sure where to start? Our beginner guides walk you through everything — how plug-in solar actually works, what size system you need, how much you can realistically save, and what to look for when buying a kit in the UK market.
FAQs
We answer the questions people actually ask — from “Is plug-in solar legal in a rented flat?” to “What happens if I plug it in during a power cut?” Our FAQ section grows constantly based on real reader questions.
Product testing & reviews
We test and review the plug-in solar kits, panels, micro-inverters, and mounting systems available to UK buyers. Our reviews are independent — we buy products ourselves or borrow them for testing, and we give you the honest verdict, including the downsides.
News & industry updates
The UK plug-in solar landscape is changing quickly. We cover new product launches, regulatory updates, government incentives, and changes to energy tariffs that affect how much you can save — so you’re always up to date.
Our promise to you
There’s a lot of noise online about solar — exaggerated savings claims, biased reviews, and guides that don’t apply to UK regulations. Solar Plugin UK exists to cut through that.
We will always be honest about what plug-in solar can and can’t do. We’ll tell you when a product isn’t worth the money. We’ll flag when a fitting method isn’t safe. And we’ll always write with the UK reader in mind — using UK regulations, UK suppliers, UK plug standards, and UK weather conditions.
If you have a question we haven’t answered, or a product you’d like us to review, get in touch. We read every message.
